Veronica Varlow posted on her blog about battling dark thoughts. (If you haven’t started following her, please do. She is just a wonderful and inspiring woman with stories to share. Revolver springs to mind). I pondered about it after reading her post and messaged her about what we do in our family.
My mother, if she was a fairy tale character, would either be the Evil Queen in Snow White or the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland. She has her moments like anyone else. When she gets bad news, she’ll retire to the bedchamber to give a good cry. It’s when she emerges, that makes her amazing. Watch out! Heads will roll.
So my exercise for you this week is this:
When the negative feedback loop cycles through your mind, go stand in front of a mirror. Acknowledge the thoughts and nod in agreement. Visualize sitting in front of the court like you are Queen Elizabeth I. Now imagine these thoughts as a person going on and on about whatever. Then picture looking to the guard next to you and say, “off with his head.” It will bring an immediate smile to your face as you send that terrible thought to it’s death.
Oh, you’ll be hearing it echoes as it’s being dragged away but as far as you are concerned, the matter has been dealt with and over. There is a bigger business to attend to.
