Popular Culture Association 2019 National ConferenceWednesday, April 17, to Saturday, April 20, 2019Wardman Park Marriot, Washington, D.C.http://www.pcaaca.org/national-conference/Come join a vivid and diverse community of scholars and professionals in Washington to discuss about the sea and the numerous challenges related to water with a popular culture perspective! My presentation will be on: Borinquén Sea Witches and Other Tales from the Deep: Puerto Rican Folktales as Family History and Modern IdentityMy great grandfather used to regale me with colorful accounts of his adventures at sea when I was but a small child. I remember hanging onto every word translated by my grandmother as he spoke in his native tongue of Borinquén. The tales mostly consisted of elementals, the undead, and witches by the sea. On my maternal line, the menfolk hailed from San Juan stock, all fishermen, sea merchants, sailors and the like. I was even told as a child that, somewhere in our hereditary past, we had descended from a particular ancestress with aquatic beginnings. This helped explain to the children why magic came easy to us and how our ancestors heard our prayers through our blood. As children hearing these stories, one can understand the drama and spellbinding ability these tales had on impressionable minds, enough so to be passed on to the modern age. This paper will recount several of these folktales and explore the ways in which they connect one family to their island past while shaping their identities in the post-diaspora urban present. #sea #ocean #tentacles #academia #pcaaca #presenter #puertorico #mermaids #witches #fairytales #gothictales #folktales

Release dates for issues #3 and #4 of Orphne for 2019!

Okay guys… I know you have been waiting for this. If not, well, you’re the lucky ones who get to profit from what I have to announce next.

Due to the unwanted attention issue #1’s cover received and printing costs in general, we have decided to make a few alterations.

First, we will be doing a new second edition cover for the downloads and prints of issue #1. Second, since trades seem to be the new fad (not to mention cost effective), we will forgoing printed single issues of 3 and 4 and instead will work toward putting together the whole story arc for trade paperback release.

We are of course considering making those single issues digitally available to purchase, for those of you who cannot wait. Stay tuned for more updates on that. With all this in mind, prices for existing issues will be adjusted accordingly for availability, hopefully making everyone happy.

On a side note, I think Orphne selling out during New Year’s Eve into the new year seems very fortuitous omen for 2019!

You can still purchase signed issues from me here.

TRY, TRY, TRY Again

Even when it feels like everyone wants to kill the unicorn…

It’s been a long time since I last wrote anything. I’ve been busy being a mother, and working on two major projects simultaneously because, well I’m insane obviously. I’m working on a comic called Orphne based on a dream I had a year ago about Psyche’s box. Here’ s a color sketch that my colorist (Justin Wolfson) provided for the cover art for issue # 1 :

Still a work in progress but you can see Mr. Wolfson’s painting is wonderful. I’m in awe of his skill and the enamored of his digital painting style. You can see his love of illustration showing through his work. I am glad to have such a member on my team. I would also like to divert your attention to these backgrounds. I’m in love. Ugh!

Our team for the film The Unnamable is wrapping the final touches on our Kickstarter. We are all excited and anxious how things will turn out. We go live on April 19, 2018.
